Fiji Packing List: What to Pack for Your Fiji Getaway

By Blog

Bula! Whether you’re arriving for a short stay at Fiji Gateway Hotel before heading further into Fiji or starting your island adventure right away, packing smart is key. From pool days and snorkeling to cultural visits and evening dinners, this guide has everything you need to pack with confidence. We’ve included practical tips, family-focused advice, and a downloadable checklist so you can leave nothing behind.

Fiji’s tropical climate and relaxed island lifestyle mean you don’t need to overpack – comfort, sun protection, and light layers are the essentials. Planning your packing around activities you’ll be doing, and considering the needs of any children travelling with you, will make your trip smoother and more enjoyable.

Essential Clothing for Fiji

Fiji’s warm, humid climate means lightweight, breathable fabrics are your best friends.

  • Lightweight, loose clothing: Cotton dresses, shorts, t-shirts, and singlets keep you cool on hot days. Linen and moisture-wicking fabrics are great if you plan active excursions.
  • Swimwear: Bring at least two sets, plus a rash vest (rashie) for sun protection during snorkeling or long hours in the pool. For children, a swim hat with a neck flap is highly recommended.
  • Evening wear: Casual to smart-casual outfits for dinners – a few dresses or nice shirts are plenty. There’s no need to bring a large wardrobe; most resort restaurants are relaxed, and barefoot dining is common at beachside venues.
  • Modest clothing: A sarong (sulu) or longer clothing is required for village visits and cultural ceremonies to cover shoulders and knees.
  • Light jacket or cardigan: Useful for cooler evenings, breezy ferry rides, or air-conditioned areas.

Tip: Pack light. Laundry services are available at most resorts, so you can refresh your wardrobe mid-stay. Most days you’ll live in swimwear, shorts, or t-shirts, even for breakfast or casual island walks.

Footwear Essentials

  • Flip-flops, slides (thongs): Perfect for the beach and around the resort.
  • Reef shoes: Protect your feet from sharp coral, rocks, or shells while exploring beaches or snorkeling.
  • Sandals or walking shoes: Comfortable options for excursions, hikes, or island adventures.

Many visitors find a pair of Birkenstocks or similar comfortable sandals is enough for almost every occasion, even dinner. Pack smart….you won’t need your entire shoe collection.

Reef Days & Beach Essentials

Long white sandy beach on a Fiji islandFiji is famous for its stunning beaches, crystal-clear water, and incredible reef experiences. Make sure you include:

  • Rash tops and polarised sunglasses for adults and kids — the Fijian sun is strong, and many visitors regret not having extra protection.
  • Swim hats for kids — these provide extra protection and help avoid sunburn during long hours in the sun.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen and lip balm — not only protects your skin, but helps preserve Fiji’s delicate marine environment. Bring a supply from home if possible, as local sunscreen is more expensive.
  • Snorkel gear: While resorts and dive shops offer rentals, having your own gear can be more convenient, especially for early-morning or spontaneous snorkel sessions.
  • Dry bag or waterproof bag: Essential for keeping phones, wallets, and electronics safe on boat trips or beach days.
  • Reusable water bottle: Staying hydrated in the tropical climate is crucial.

Tip: Bring a few simple pool or beach toys for children. Buckets, water guns, and small floats purchased at home are much more affordable than resort stores, which often sell similar items at a premium.

Village Visits & Cultural Etiquette

Fijian warrior prepares traditional kavaFiji is rich in tradition, and a visit to a local village or participation in a kava ceremony can be a highlight.

  • Cover shoulders and knees with a sarong or modest dress.
  • Remove hats and sunglasses during ceremonies.
  • Lightweight, breathable fabrics are ideal — it can get warm quickly.
  • Be respectful of local customs and ask permission before taking photographs.

Dressing appropriately is not just about etiquette — it’s also a way to show appreciation for Fijian culture and ensure a positive, welcoming experience.

Toiletries & Health Items

  • Insect repellent: Tropical strength is recommended, particularly during evenings and around freshwater areas.
  • High SPF sunscreen & lip balm: The Fijian sun is intense; even cloudy days can cause burns. And remember to reapply throughout the day!
Aloe vera or moisturizer: Perfect for soothing sun-exposed skin.
  • Basic medication & first aid: Include antihistamines, antiseptic cream, prescription medicines and pain relief. Even over-the- counter products like swimmers’ ears and ‘stingoes’ can be a lifesaver for families planning on spending a lot of time in the water or outdoors (which is everyone, right?).
  • Tip: Pack small quantities in your hand luggage for easy access during travel.

Gear & Electronics

  • Power board & adapter: Fiji uses Type I sockets, compatible with Australian and New Zealand plugs. A small power board helps charge multiple devices at once.
  • Phone/camera accessories: Extra SD cards, waterproof cases, and chargers are essential for capturing memories.
  • Quiet in-room activities for kids: Colouring books, small puzzles, or travel games help on quiet afternoons or during a midday rest in the air-conditioned rooms.

What to Pack for Kids

  • Rash tops / swim shirts
  • Extra swimwear
  • Swim hats for sun protection
  • Floaties or small pool toys and sand buckets
  • Snacks your child loves
  • Travel games, colouring books
  • ipads and chargers plus headphones
  • Life vests if needed

Tip: Pack familiar snacks from home — while resorts and local stores offer options, prices are higher than at home. Always declare packaged snacks at customs to avoid issues.

Snacks, Convenience & Trader Stores

  • Mini convenience stores at Fiji Gateway or resort shops offer basic snacks, drinks, and toiletries.
  • Hotel convenience stores and various shops in town or at the local Denarau marina sell ice creams, drinks, and snacks — but expect local prices to be higher than at home.
  • For toddlers or picky eaters, bringing favourite snacks from home ensures there’s always something familiar on hand.

Hand Luggage vs Checked Luggage

  • Hand luggage: Swimwear, a change of clothes, sunscreen, medication, travel documents, and electronics.
  • Checked luggage: Bulk toiletries, extra clothing, shoes, snorkeling gear, toys, and souvenirs or gifts.

Tip: Organise your luggage by activity to make mornings and excursions easier. For example, keep snorkeling and beach gear together for easy access, even if you are just planning a simple stopover or day use at the hotel on your way to or from Nadi Airport.

Important Travel Tips

  • Pack light: Most days are casual — swimwear, shorts, and t-shirts are perfect.
  • Cash (FJD): Useful for small markets or vendors; most resorts and restaurants accept cards.
  • Rain gear: A light poncho or umbrella is recommended if travelling November–April. That said, most hotels and resorts will have umbrellas you can use for the race between your room and the restaurant if you forget!
  • Leave room for donations: Have a little extra space in your case? Clothes, books, or small gifts for local communities are appreciated, so feel free to bring these items with the intention of leaving them for local children and villages to use.
